Are you listening? What you wish you learned earlier.

Make today, THE DAY.

Here is a quote from a person with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) who answered the question what you wished you learned earlier in the Parkinson’s Disease Forum (reference is at the end).

What you wished you learned earlier

Words of wisdom from a person with Parkinson’s Disease

…”what I wish I had, “Listened,” to more rather than, “Learned,” is the importance of ALL the forms of EXERCISE and how truly important it is to people with PD. I have had PD for a little more than 7 years and I am 50 years old and I have only really started exercising in the past two years and, it DOES make a difference.

OK maybe you don’t have PD, but maybe you might. If not that maybe someday you will be diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease , if not that, maybe you will have Type 2 Diabetes. You name it and they are all maybe one day. Point is, we spend our time learning things we know we should be paying attention to, but do we listen and act on what we hear or just wait until it is that day?

The last three posts were focused on excuses. What are yours?

My last three posts were focused on excuses for not exercising.  To recap, they were: I’m too busy, I’m not motivated, and I don’t know what to do or how to get started. These excuses are pretty universal for not making change.

Not knowing what to do is a pretty fixable problem . Find and hire a trainer, view a video (there are lots of them), or even just take a walk. All of these are good starts with the word START being the key, and you can do them today?

Why not today?

I have been having an interesting dialogue with a woman who over the pandemic became very sedentary and gained weight. She wanted to lose weight and begin exercising. When offered several options for personal training, both in person or online, they were all met with well-articulated excuses why she wasn’t ready to get started right now.  I find the people who say TODAY IS THE DAY and start small with some change are those who go on to be successful with achieving their goal, whatever it may be. It’s like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, you may have to try a few before they are “just right.”

As we begin Summer here in the Northern Hemisphere, or Winter in the Southern Hemisphere, what better time than a climate transition and a new season to change your mindset and start TODAY. Research shows that people are better at change during these type of transitions.

We never know what is around the corner or down the road, but we can start TODAY in anticipation of tomorrow. What small step are you going to take TODAY, or are you going to wait for someday?
