Wellness Unleashed: Daily Practices for Your Best Year Yet

Welcome to 2024. Here we are midway through January and oops, those great intentions are in the rearview mirror.  What happened?  For me, it was falling off the wagon with my pull-up resolution.  Excuses: I was gone one week, and I got busy… ya da ya da ya da. (Who remembers Seinfield?)

I will be 70 in March and want to do pull-ups (my original goal was 7, now it’s just one – yes, I pivoted) and run 7 miles for my birthday (that should be easily, but it may be slower than I prefer).  Yikes… Somehow the first half of January just slipped by.  BAM, hit the rest button.

We folks who are 60 and beyond are heading into dog years. Yep, count the number of Thanksgivings you optimally have left.  Sorry to be a boo leader, but get my drift? Time is slipping by and the possibilities for a healthier, fitter you should not be sitting on the roadside! We need to get going!

I want to dive into the world of resolutions (focused on fitness and health) with a dash of inspiration and the magic of BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits.  (Some of my other posts on habits are below)

Let’s reset those New Year’s dreams into unstoppable habits that will leave you feeling vibrant and accomplished. Not your jam? OK,  if you prefer sitting in a lump in the easy chair, it’s your choice. But time’s a wasting… Dog years. Here are some suggestions.

🌟 Embrace Small Wins for Big Victories

  • Start with Micro/Tiny Goals: Kick off your fitness (or any other resolutions) journey with tiny, achievable goals. Think of a quick morning stretch before you get out of bed, a quick dance break in between meetings, or a couple of deep breaths just for fun. Small steps lead to giant leaps! Some of my T60 Fitters state they are embarrassed because they can’t do xyz.  Please, never be embarrassed if you are trying your best. It’s your best, not a competition with someone else. This is about you, not someone else.
  • Celebrate Mini Victories: Every small step forward is a win! Celebrate completing your daily habit or goal, no matter how small. Celebrate!  These celebrations fuel your brain and drive your motivation. Maybe that celebration is that quick dance break!

🔄 Integrate Fitness Seamlessly into Your Day

  • Find Your Rhythm: Anchor your fitness habits to existing routines. How can you blend a great stretch, or a one-leg balance with your morning ritual?  What about grooving to your favorite tunes while cooking dinner? Make it a part of what you already love to do!
  • Make it Fun: Transform your workout into a joyous activity. Dance to your favorite beats, take a moment to inhale the fresh air when you are outdoors, and maybe think about joining a fitness class with a friend. When it’s enjoyable, it becomes a habit! A friend always helps!

🎉 Celebrate Your Journey, Every Step of the Way

  • Acknowledge Progress: Recognize and appreciate your progress, whether completing 3 days of consistent workouts or getting that one extra chair sit-to-stand. Each milestone deserves a shoutout!
  • Positive Reinforcement: Treat yourself! Reward your hard work with something you love—a relaxing bubble bath, a favorite treat (just not too many), or a new workout outfit. You’ve earned it! Even a pat on your back and that silent atta boy- it all works!

🚀 Make 2024 Your Year of Active Living

  • Do you have a Fitness Buddy? If not, try to find one. Share the excitement and invite someone to join you on this energetic adventure. Maybe your buddy needs that extra push, you can help with that. Don’t have a buddy?  Go to my Instagram Account @sandifeaster and let me know that you don’t have a buddy.  Let’s build a community. The more, the merrier! Research has shown that isolation and loneliness is as bad as many diseases.
